Understanding Anxiety

When you are anxious about something it generally is not the event or thing itself you are anxious about but rather it is the way you are THINKING about it that is causing your anxiety. Its important to know that it is our thoughts that determine our emotions and not the events themselves.

They way we THINK about things change how we FEEL. The body and our emotions react to the stimulus sent to it from the brain. Basically we feel what we think. Think about it, most of the time when you feel anxious or afraid you are not actually in the event but rather it is when you are THINKING about it isn’t it?

So because of this we have to be very careful what we think about don’t we? We cant just let our minds just think any random thoughts we have to be there deciding what thoughts we allow ourselves to think! It seems though that it’s our feelings that trigger our thoughts but it isn’t. It’s just that we aren’t aware of our thoughts until we are feeling the feelings.  Remember our bodies cant just randomly produce, fear, anxiety or depression, these emotions are caused by thought patterns. This is not to be confused by moods, moods are caused by chemical fluctuations in the body. Whereas anxiety is caused by the way we think.

Now some people might argue that it really is the job interview or the plane flight that is causing the anxiety but remember that if your felling anxious before these events then it is your THOUGHTS and not the events themselves that are causing the problem. If the event or situation really is a life threatening situation then it is best to avoid it so in that case your brain is giving your body the right signals. The chances are though it is the negative movies we play in our head that are causing the anxiety.

So what can we do to stop us thinking bad thoughts? The first thing to know is that it is us who control our minds and not the other way round. If we aren’t the ones the ones in control who is? Of course it’s us but we can become passive and let our minds run all by itself if we forget to be vigilant.  The problems occur when you don’t keep your mind in check. If we just allow negative thoughts to enter our psyche and become a habitualised way of thinking they will very quickly change out feelings.

In order to keep your mind healthy and free from negative thinking I have outlined 8 principles that are detailed in my book The Principles of Life: All you need to know to live the best life ever!
