Memory Improvement

Oh how many times do I hear “I’ve got a bad memory”? One of the beliefs that I had when I was training to be a therapist was that I had a poor memory and I have since learned that a lot of people believe the same about themselves.

I believed this so much that a month before starting college I called my tutor personally and pleaded with him to hypnotise me so that I could have some memory improvement training so that I could remember the upcoming information!  He just laughed at me and told me to not be so silly.  Having a poor memory is a common negative belief that I hear nearly every day from both clients and from everyday people that I meet.

The truth of the matter is that there is nothing wrong with your memory.  It is just that you haven’t concentrated fully on whatever was said or written.  If your mind is on other things than what you want to remember then your mind thinks that that must be unimportant and places it in the “unimportant” section of your mind.

Ponder this: how many things do you remember every day that you take for granted and never think to point this fact out to yourself?  I bet that this morning you remembered to put your underwear on and brush your teeth, didn’t you?  How many times have you remembered the things that you had forgotten about?  Can you recall that?  Think about it: you pull yourself down for forgetting things, yet you remember much more and never give yourself credit for the things you remember!

I have people come to see me all the time and list all of the things that they had forgotten to do!  To that I usually say to them: “Please tell me about all the kinds of things that you recall forgetting about” or “Can you remember the last time you forgot something?”  I do this to show them how good their memory really is.  The fact is that we remember to do about 95 per cent of the things we need to do but we take it so for granted that we only remember about the things we forget.  Confused?  Think about it.

The biggest factor in blocking the minds natural ability to remember is that you are:

A.     Preoccupied by other thoughts, such as the conscious mind chatter.

B.      You are not relaxed and could be under stress.

C.     Not motivated or excited by the work you are trying to remember.

Here are some tips that I have used that have helped me to sky rocket my memory retention power by over 400 per cent. Some of these simple concepts I learned with Kevin Trudeau’s brilliant Mega Memory home study course; the other stuff I can’t remember where they came from! Ha ha only joking.

Memory improvement tips

Tip No. 1:  Begin to believe that you have super-powered memory. Even if you don’t believe it, tell yourself that it is so and act and think as if it were true.  If people ask you “How’s your memory?” tell them that it’s excellent and soon it will be true.  This has to be tried to be believed!  I know this sounds really cheesy but try it you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Tip No. 2:  Remember times when your memory was excellent and use them as your references for the new belief that you have a great memory. Whenever you remember something important give your self a big pat on the back. This will help to install a new belief in yourself

Tip No. 3:  When you read something, imagine hearing the author reading it to you in some place you might imagine they may live or have lived, or imagine yourself reading it out in front of an audience. The point of this exercise is so that you are fully concentrated in what you are reading and not thinking about what you have to do later that evening! It stops the chatter and lets you focus on what you are doing.

Tip No. 4:  Remember that the tense mind prevents the natural flow of information, so relax and don’t try to force out the information you want. Relax and it will flow out. Have you ever come out of an exam to find that, now that you have relaxed, you can remember all the answers? This is because now that you are relaxed your mind is able to release the information, which previously was locked in because of the build-up of tension. Relaxation is the key to memory improvement and recall.

More memory improvement advice can be found in The Principles of Life book where the Thought Re-training system is explained to show you how to cut out the negative chatter of the conscious mind. This is vital if you want your mind clear to absorb important information and recall.
